In 1750 an intrepid band of families packed all their belongings and claimed (at the time), six square miles of the Green River Valley. Now it is bounded on the north by Chatham and Canaan, and by Mass.on the east, on the south by Hillsdale, and on the west by Ghent.
Sparsely populated even today, there are only 1453 people living on almost 49 square miles in this lush Punsit Valley. As a result, the woods teem with wildlife...turkey, deer and pheasant.
It's a great place to visit, and several fine B&B's have become local attractions. The Spencertown Country House, hosted by Heather and John Spitzer is a homey Federal Colonial decorated with period furniture. When you drive east along Route 203 to the hamlet of Spencertown (Just a couple of miles east of the Taconic Parkway), you'll discover many original Colonials dating to the early 1800's. Make sure you visit the fine antiques center, the Spencertown Academy, and the country store.
